The Big Reveal
Are you tired of weird pictures yet? Ready for something not so elusive and vague? Good, me too. So what did happen this weekend?
We shot a scene from Love in the Time of Monsters.
And it was AWESOME!
The powers that be (including myself) felt that it might be beneficial to us to shoot a quick scene to before production kicked up for real. Give us a chance to put the system through a stress test, you know. Also, it would net us a great short piece to present to people when they ask what kind of movie we’re making. Good stuff all around.
The tough part was picking a scene that really exemplified what Love in the Time of Monsters is all about. It needed to be: something that involved the monsters (obviously); ideally involved a bit of a love story; and could stand on it’s own with only minor tweaking. In the end, we settled on a scene near the beginning of the movie where Carla (one of our heroes) surprises her fiance Johnny after work by sprawling out on his hot rod while wearing lingerie. Unbeknownst to her, of course, Johnny has become a single-minded toxic beast underneath his Bigfoot costume. Terror, of course, ensues.
Besides, what better way to get the point across than a pretty girl in lingerie being all sexy on a muscle car? Amirite?
The scene in theory worked great, but it needed a bit of tweaking to make it work in practice. You see, in the feature, by the time you reach this point, you’ve already met Carla, know her struggle, and are kind of rooting for her, but in this new stand alone version there’s none of that. I needed to adjust the scene, start it earlier than written, to implicitly show the audience of this short piece who they should be rooting for. Baby birds, remember?
From there, things became elementary: Working with department heads, actors, and the like to achieve my vision for the piece. You know, the easy part. Especially when we have such a talented and amazing crew in place.
I know what you’re asking: ”Who was Johnny? Who was Carla? Tell me more about this amazing crew! Details man! DETAILS!”
I get it and I’m totally bursting at the seams holding in all this awesome new info, but I gotta get you to come back somehow. Right? We’re sitting on a motherload of awesome news that we’re planning to unleash in the coming weeks. From cast to crew, there are a ton of new faces in the realm of Love in the Time of Monsters who I can’t wait to introduce you to. Stay tuned, reveals are coming. I promise.
In the meantime though, check out this super new, updated (and much better looking) version of the Love in the Time of Monsters teaser poster that I posted a few months ago:
That’s something cool, right? And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
Before we get to all that though (I know, I’m a dirty tease), just a programing note for y’all: We’re headed to the lodge this weekend. There’s a big grip of us going, and I’ll be posting regular updates as long as I have service. So make sure you drop by this weekend and keep us company on the long drive up there.
Or, you know, subscribe to our twitter feeds and get your info dumps from there. Whichever, we’re easy. Check out Allison @alliecine, Andy @gunnforhire, Matt @platypusrobot, and, of course, Slavko @UncleSlavko. Come join the fun!
Special note: Super big thanks to Raphe Wolfgang for the awesomely amazing production photos. The guy is magic behind the lens, plain and simple. Go check out his stuff!
