An Update From Post Production
You know the best feeling in the world for a director? Watching the first cut and realizing that all the pieces fit together.
In the heat of the moment, in the complete overwhelming stress that happens on set, it’s easy to make compromises and decisions that just create messes down the way. From forgotten shots to misremembering how things will cut together, it’s the second guessing that kept me awake at night for a solid month after we wrapped production. You do the best you can with your plan in production, and just hope it can survive all the pressures (Budgets, schedules, blocking, and various on-set curveballs) to become a coherent story on the other side.
That said, I’m happy to report that Love in the Time of Monsters has survived the crucible that is production to make on amazing looking rough cut.
Sure, there are still some things to work on (timings, reveals, and a couple of line readings) and at times we’re missing some pieces that would be nice (a closeup here, an insert there, a fill-in-the-blank somewhere else), but on a whole the movie is fantastic. Big props to our editor, Todd Zelin, for making that happen.
I don’t want to get into too many details about the cut, except for this one thing: Our leads are amazing. I know I might be a bit biased, but Gena Shaw and Marissa Skell are positively magnetic on screen together. Their combination of charisma, beauty, and pure talent make them a force to be reckoned with. I almost want to make a web series about the daily adventures of Marla and Carla, just so I can see more of them on screen together. “Love in the Time of Redding”, I can see it now…
Until then, I’ll just have to relish the moments I do have and continue to tease you with them. Don’t you worry though, with things heating up like they have been (and boy have they) and the editing process rolling, you’ll get a chance to see this movie in no time. And who knows, we might even pump out a trailer for you sometime even sooner. Stay tuned.
Meanwhile, I need to get working on the second cut.
